Coaching Mission Statement:
“At Collegians Soccer Club we aim to play the right way from the first day.”
Coaching Philosophy
All teams in all age groups will endeavour to play the same way – the Collies’ Way; playing
out from the back in the first instance, building pressure through positive possession and
maximising chance creation.
Core Coaching Principles
- Don’t be rigid in your coaching style or beliefs. You need to adapt to your players and to new ideas.
- When in possession, ensure a player’s first thought and first touch are positive (attacking) and with a purpose.
- Encourage and develop players to be comfortable in possession in all situations from an early age. Accept mistakes.
- Promote positive play over negative play – encourage players to use learned skills and techniques in 1 v 1 situations. Accept mistakes.
- Praise and encourage individual and team development over results.
Coaching Expectations
- Lead by example; be punctual for training and games, be organised and provide a positive role model for the players.
- Demand players respect their coaches, teammates, opposing players and match officials.
- Focus on technique and controlled movement over speed in formative years (5-10). If sessions or even games descend into ‘kick and chase’, it should be corrected.
- Direct parents who insist on ‘coaching from the sidelines’ whose comments contradict or criticise your efforts to me or the Club President. Please do not engage in arguments.
- All players in non-competitive football (U6-U12) will receive equal opportunities to play, be in different positions perform key roles irrespective of age, gender and ability.
REMEMBER
As a coach you WILL influence your players……make it positive!
A player’s approach to football now and into the future may depend entirely on you. Their
motivation, enthusiasm and inspiration to improve, stay the same or give up entirely may
rest with how you portray yourself and your treatment of them. Their attitudes toward
fellow players, match officials and sportsmanship in general will be a reflection of you as
their coach.
You cannot possibly know the impacts large or small you will have on your players inside of
football and more importantly, outside of the game as they grow up. Approach coaching the
right way, be a good role model and a positive influence.
